SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's lacrosse team got back to their winning ways on Friday morning, making easy work of Chowan University en route to a 16-3 victory over the Hawks at University Turf Stadium. The win advances the Lions to a record of 4-5, while the first-year Hawks drop to a mark of 1-8 on the season.
A total of 12 Lions contributed to the team's scoring efforts on the day. Stephanie Marran dished out five assists to lead the team in overall points. Freshman Cassie Miller was one point behind, tallying a hat trick and an assist for four points. Joanna Chadwick notched a hat trick of her own, while Paige Leggio and Alix Murray scored two goals apiece. Christian Minneci and Allie Sheftall matched the duo in points with a goal and an assist each, while Alyssa Viscomi, Kelly Smigiera, Jennifer Doyle, and Brynn Laverdure each found the back of the net once. Lauren Irish completed the scoring for the day, earning the first assist of her collegiate career.
Sheftall had a solid game in all areas of the field, adding three ground balls, a draw control, and three caused turnovers to her two points. Marran led the game off the draw, pulling in seven for the Lions.
The Hawks were led by Mackenzie Reid with two goals, while Erica Jefferson placed one shot between the pipes.
The Lions got off to a slow start, and Chowan found themselves on the scoreboard first with an unassisted goal from Reid just 27 seconds into the contest. Despite the early goal from the Hawks, Saint Leo went on to score nine unanswered goals throughout the remainder of the first half.
The Green and Gold opened the second half by piling on four more goals to pull ahead to a score of 13-1 with 24:04 left in the game. Chowan broke the scoring streak with Jefferson converting a free-position shot at the 19:30 mark, but Saint Leo answered back with three more goals for a score of 16-2. The Hawks notched one final goal on a free-position shot from Reid at the 3:16 mark for a final score of 16-3.
Saint Leo dominated the stat sheet, leading the game in shots 38-5, shots on goal 29-4, ground balls 22-8, and caused turnovers 10-1. The Lions were successful on 9-of-10 clear attempts, and put pressure on the Hawks to hold them to just seven good clears on 17 attempts.
The Saint Leo women's lacrosse team returns to action on Sunday, March 17, when they take on Colorado Mesa at University Turf Stadium.
