SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo women's lacrosse freshman midfielder Cassie Miller notched a goal and an assist as the Lions fell to sixth-ranked Limestone 18-6 on Monday morning at University Turf Stadium. The loss drops the Lions record to 3-5, while the Saints advance their record to 6-1.
Limestone was led in goals by Sam McCarrick, who racked up a total of five. Chelsea Treat (4g, 1a) and Sylvia Queener (2g, 3a) matched McCarrick in overall points, while Sarah Oor led the team in points with six as she scored two goals and piled on four assists. In total, seven players contributed to the Saints' point total.
Limestone pulled ahead to a two goal lead early in the game, but the Lions put themselves up on the scoreboard thanks a converted free position shot from Chadwick with 24:44 on the clock. The Saints netted three straight to pull ahead to a 5-1 advantage, but Marran broke the streak at the 21:56 mark as she found the back of the net on another free position shot for the Lions.
Miller followed suit to pull the Lions to within two, with the score at 5-3 with 17:05 left in the half, but Limestone rattled off six straight over the ensuing ten minutes to extend their advantage to 11-3 with 6:20 to go in the period. Leggio closed out the half with a goal off of an assist from Miller, setting the score at 11-4 at the break.
The Saints notched the first goal entering into the second stanza, but the Lions answered back 26 seconds later. Limestone found their stride yet again and scored four straight to pull ahead 16-5 with 15:29 to go before Saint Leo was able to strike again with a goal from Murray with 11:44 left in the half.
The Saints closed out the game with two more quick goals, closing the regional matchup with a final score of 18-6.
The Saints led the game in saves (7-3), draw controls (15-11), and shots (23-16). The Lions came up with more ground balls, 19-11, and were successful on 4-of-9 free position shots.
The Saint Leo women's lacrosse team returns to action on Friday, March 15, when they take on Chowan University. Game time against the Hawks is slated for 11 a.m. at University Turf Field.
