SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's lacrosse team easily handled Mount Olive College on Thursday evening, pulling out an 11-6 victory over the Trojans at University Turf Stadium. The win marks the first of the season for the Lions, and advances their record to 1-4 on the season, while Mount Olive drops to a mark of 3-4.
Alix Murray and Stephanie Marran paced the Lions with three goals and one assist each for five points apiece on the night. Joanna Chadwick netted two goals, with Christiana Minneci, Allie Sheftall, and Paige Leggio scoring one goal each. Minneci added an assist to her total, while the Lions saw a team best two assists out of freshman Cassie Miller.
In cage for the Green and Gold, Brittney Millsap picked up eight saves while facing 18 shots and 14 shots on frame. Mount Olive's Sarah Snell saw a full 60 minutes between the pipes, setting aside 10 shots while facing a total of 24 shots and 21 shots on goal.
The Trojans saw scoring efforts from five players, led by Riann Daziel with two goals.
The Lions made easy work of their opponent in the opening minutes, running out to a five goal lead in the initial 15 minutes. Mount Olive's Jihee Choi final broke the Lion scoring streak, converting a free position shot with 10:04 on the clock to set the score at 5-1.
Six minutes ticked off of the clock before another goal, scored by Marran with 4:46 before the half to give the Lions a 6-1 lead. But Mount Olive answered right back 16 seconds later, and then rattled off two more goals within 17 seconds of each other two minutes later to pull within two, 6-4, with 2:41 to go.
Despite the late flurry of action from the Trojans, Saint Leo stayed composed. With 1:15 left before the break, Murray connected a pass to Marran for the final goal of the half, setting the score at 7-4.
Saint Leo entered into the second stanza focused and ready to play, scoring two quick goals in three minutes to pull ahead 9-4. A goal from Murray off of an assist from Marran with 15:59 to go pulled Saint Leo ahead 10-4, but 54 seconds later the Trojans snapped Saint Leo's streak with a goal from Candace Corkin to pull to within five, 10-5.
Both teams scored one goal apiece in the final 15 minutes of play, closing out the contest with a score of 11-6, and giving Saint Leo their first win of the season.
The Lions led the shot count 24-18, and placed 21 shots on frame compared to the Trojan's 14 shots on goal. Saint Leo won the ground ball battle, 27-20, and came up with 11 draw controls to Mount Olive's nine. The Lions were successful on 17-of-21 clear attempts, and converted one goal on two free position shots. Mount Olive was 4-for-8 on free position shots, but only caused 19 fouls to Saint Leo's 30.
The Lions return to action on Saturday, March 9, when they host Belmont Abbey College. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. at University Turf Stadium.
