Women’s golf finishes second at Island Getaway; Arguello fifth

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – Junior Margine Arguello placed fifth overall and led Saint Leo women's golf to a second-place team finish following Tuesday's final round of the University of Illinois-Springfield Island Getaway, held at the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Resort.

Arguello fired an even-par 71 on the Grand Rio Mar's 6083-yard Ocean Course, giving her a two-day total of four-over 146 and sole possession of fifth place on the individual leaderboard. Arguello's 71 was one of only two cards turned in on Tuesday that were par-or-lower.

Junior Amanda Jakobsson and senior Marie Coors were among three golfers tied for sixth place with a six-over 148. Coors climbed six spots on the leaderboard during Tuesday's round after firing a one-over 72. Jakobsson matched her Monday score with a three-over 74.

Junior Vilde Eriksen fired a six-over 77 on Tuesday for a two-day tally of 152 (+10) and finished 11th overall, while freshman Izzy Lawrence shot a one-over 72 in the second round and finished the tournament tied for 15th on the leaderboard with a 155 (+13).

Saint Leo posted a 289 on Tuesday – 11 strokes better than its score in Monday's first round – and carded a 589 (+21) for the tournament to place second on the team leaderboard. The Lions finished six strokes behind the tournament winners from Tarleton State (Texas). St. Edward's University was a distant third behind Saint Leo with a 612 (+44), followed by Texas Wesleyan with a 622 (+54).

St. Edward's Johany Rivera claimed medalist honors have carding a 70 on Tuesday for an even-par 142 for the tournament. Tarleton State's Breann Smith was second with a 144 (+2), followed by Tarleton State's Casey Wild and Anderson College's Kate Hill tied for third at 145 (+3).

The UIS Island Getaway was the final Fall event for Saint Leo women's golf. The Lions' next competition will be on February 5-6, 2017, when Saint Leo travels to Saint Augustine, Fla., to participate in the Flagler College World Golf Invitational.
