Four fall events, six in spring, highlight women’s golf slate

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Four fall tournaments and five spring events will prepare the Saint Leo women's golf team for another run deep into the NCAA championship, with the 2016-17 schedule announced Wednesday by head coach Tommy Baker.

"I think that the 2016-17 schedule is going to be one of the most competitive in our program's history," said Baker. "We have some familiar tournaments in our schedule along with a few new ones that give us the opportunity to compete against teams we don't see on a regular basis. Overall, it is a great blend of events regionally and nationally, that will allow us to build on the success and experiences we gained last season."

The Lions open their 2016-17 season in the Midwest at the University of Indianapolis Invitational on September 12-13.

Saint Leo will try to defend its title won last year at the Old South Golf Links in Bluffton, S.C., at the newly renamed Battle at Old South, now hosted by UNC-Pembroke. That event will take place on September 24-25, with junior Amanda Jakobsson attempting to defend the medalist honors she won last year when she fired a seven-under 137 over the 36-hole event.

The Lions host the Saint Leo Invitational on their home course at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club on October 17-18. All-American Marie Coors won the event in 2015 following a one-hole playoff over Montevallo's Elaine Wood, and will be trying to repeat in her final collegiate campaign.

The fall portion of the schedule ends with an appearance at the University of Illinois at Springfield Island Getaway in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, on October 24-25.

Saint Leo's five-event spring pre-championship slate starts on February 5-6, 2017, at the Flagler College World Golf Invitational, and continues at the Florida Southern Invitational at Grasslands Golf & Country Club on February 20-21. The Lions then head to Savannah, Ga., to compete in the Armstrong Pirate Women's Invitational at Savannah Quarters Country Club on March 6-7, with tournaments at Stetson University (March 25-27) and Florida Tech (April 10-11) wrapping up the regular season slate.

The Sunshine State Conference Women's Golf Championship will take place on April 23-25 in Winter Haven, Fla., at the Country Club of Winter Haven.

Newberry College will serve as host for the 2017 NCAA Division II Women's Golf South Super Regional, which will be held May 8-10 at the Members Club at Woodcreek course in Elgin, S.C.  The 2017 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championship will be hosted by the University of Findlay (Ohio), and held at the Findlay Country Club.
