Women’s golf jumps five places at NCAA championship

AURORA, Colo. – Saint Leo women's golf fired a 294 in Thursday's second round of the 2016 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championship, climbing from to fifth on the team leaderboard at the tournament's halfway point.

The Lions are at 599 strokes (+23) overall, and trail the next team on the board, Nova Southeastern, by seven strokes. Rollins College continues to the lead the field of 12 teams with a 578 (+2), after carding a 288 on Thursday.

Saint Leo's 294 was the third-lowest round of the day, and the Lions' fifth-lowest round this season.

Junior Marie Coors and sophomore Margine Arguello led Saint Leo's day two charge, each carding a one-over 73 on the day on the par-72, 6,468-yard CommonGround Golf Course. Both golfers are tied for 40th on the individual leaderboard with a nine-over (153) for the tournament, and each climbed 23 spots on the individual leaderboard on the strength of their Thursday round.

Coors recorded her first birdies of the tournament during Thursday's second round on the par-3 no. 6 and the par-5 no. 7. The same was true for Arguello, who birdied the par-5 11th and 15th holes for her first birdies of the championship.

Sophomores Vilde Eriksen and Amanda Jakobsson each shot a two-over 74 in the second round. Eriksen carded birdies on no. 10 and no. 15, and is tied for 10th on the leaderboard with a two-day score of 145 (+1). Jakobsson jumped nine spots on the individual leaderboard and is tied for 29th with a 151 (+7).

Junior Sabrina Rumbaugh fired a four-over 76, her fourth-best round of the season, and is tied for 40th on the leaderboard with a 153 (+9) along with Coors and Arguello. After carding bogeys on four of her first nine holes after teeing off on no. 10, Rumbaugh settled in an shot par on the course's front nine holes.

Rollins' Hally Leadbetter leads the field of 72 golfers with a 141 (-3), after shooting a three-under 69 on Thursday. A group of four golfers are two strokes back at one-under (143) for the tournament.

Saint Leo will tee off for its third round at CommonGround starting at 8:00 a.m. Mountain Time/10:00 a.m. Eastern Time off the no. 1 tee.
