Coors named SSC Co-Women’s Golfer of the Year

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo junior Marie Coors was one of two Sunshine State Conference women's golfers named Co-Golfers of the Year, when the conference's honors were announced Friday afternoon.

Coors will share the award with Barry's Tilda Larsson, who also took SSC Freshman of the Year honors. Coors is the first Saint Leo golfer to be tabbed as the SSC's golfer of the year.

Coors was also a First Team selection to the All-Sunshine State Conference squad. Joining her on the All-SSC teams was sophomore Amanda Jakobsson, who was an Honorable Mention choice.

Coors posted a 75.13 stroke average over 23 rounds in 2015-16, playing the entire fall with an injured wrist and then most of her spring season while recovering from wrist surgery. Having been given a clean bill of health from her doctors in early April, Coors came roaring back at the SSC Championship to win by six strokes – and defeating co-player of the year Larsson by nine strokes - including a one-under 71 in the final round.

"I'm very happy for Marie to be named SSC Co-Player of the Year.  Winning this award is testament to her work ethic, preparation and overall commitment to excellence," said Saint Leo head women's golf coach Tommy Baker.

Coors also posted two other top-five finishes, including medalist honors at the Saint Leo Invitational to finish out the fall slate of events.

Jakobsson charted a 77.18 stroke average over 26 rounds in 2015-16, and played as Saint Leo's top golfer during most of the season. She claimed medalist honors at the Lander University Lady Bearcat Invitational, shooting a seven-under 137 at the 36-hole tournament on the Old South Golf Links in Bluffton, S.C.

Jakobsson posted a second-place finish at the Flagler College Fall Slam at Marsh Creek Country Club, and was tied for fifth at the Saint Leo Invitational.

"I am pleased to see Amanda receive this recognition for her play this season," said Baker. "The best part of this for our program is that Amanda has yet to reach her full potential on the golf course, and I am confident that a year from now she will also rank among the top golfers in the SSC."
