Women’s golf leads the field at Saint Leo Invitational

DADE CITY, Fla. – Saint Leo sophomore Vilde Eriksen sits atop the individual leaderboard while the Lions hold the top spot in the team standings following Monday's first day of competition at the 2015 Saint Leo Invitational.

The Lions carded a 297 (+9) in the first round and hold a two-stroke lead over second-place Lynn University (299, +11). Barry University (300, +12) is three strokes off the pace.


Eriksen shot one under on both the front and back nine, and returned to the clubhouse with a two-under 70 on the par 72, 6117 yard Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club South Course. She recorded birdies on three of the final holes and four birdies on the back nine, including one of only seven birdies on #10.

Junior Marie Coors carded back-to-back birdies on #8 and #9 and shot two more on #13 and #16 to finish with a one-under 71. She is second on the individual leaderboard, one stroke off the pace set by Eriksen.

Sophomore Amanda Jakobsson and junior Minta Yin each posted rounds of 78 (+6) and are tied for 24th in the field of 85 golfers. Freshman Mao Young fired a 79 (+7) and is tied for 34th.

The Lions have four individuals playing in the field, with freshman Alex Velez leading the group with 10-over 82. Sophomore Margine Arguello and senior Kellianne May each carded an 84 (+12), while freshman Emma Duncan shot an 89 (+17).


The Lions emerged from a blustery day of golf at Lake Jovita atop the 16-team leaderboard. Trailing Saint Leo, Lynn, and Barry are West Florida (306, +18) and Flagler College (311, +23).

After the one-two combination of Eriksen and Coors, Barry's Gaby Victoria is third at an even-par 72. Lynn's Samantha Barber and Jenny Ayala are tied for fourth at 73 (+1), followed by Keiser's Sabrina Schloo (74, +2). Six golfers are tied for seventh at three-over (75).


The Lions return to Lake Jovita on Tuesday for round 2 of the 2015 Saint Leo Invitational, which starts at 8:30 a.m. on the South Course. Saint Leo's first golfers tee off at 10:00 a.m. with Young at #1, concluding at 10:36 a.m. with Eriksen off #1 tee and Velez off #10 tee.
