Women’s golf commands play on day one at Lander Invite

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Saint Leo women's golf shattered one record and matched another on its way to a 14-stroke lead after Saturday's first round at the Lander University Invitational.

Saint Leo combined for a 279 on the par 72, 5801-yard Old South Golf Links course, setting a new record for lowest single round team score in program history. The Lions eclipsed the previous mark of 290, set in 2013-14 during the first round of the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate.

  • Sophomore Amanda Jakobsson and junior Marie Coors are 1-2 atop the individual leaderboard, after firing rounds of 66 (-6) and 68 (-4) respectively. Jakobsson's 66 tied the Saint Leo record for lowest individual single round score, matching Coors' 66 during the first round of the 2014 Sunshine State Conference Women's Golf Championship.
  • Junior Minta Yin fired a 72, her best round since joining the Lions after transferring from Murray State, and giving Saint Leo three golfers with rounds of par-or-better in Saturday's first round of the tournament. She is tied for fifth on the individual leaderboard.
  • Sophomore Vilde Eriksen carded a one-over 73, and is tied for 13th overall, while freshman Mao Young shot a six-over 78 and is tied for 39th.
  • Sophomore Margine Arguello played as an individual at the Lander Invitational and carded a 12-over 84, placing her tied for 69th on the leaderboard.

Head Coach Tommy Baker: "I'm very proud of the team today. We knew coming into this event that we had to avoid the big numbers that plagued us in our last event in Pinehurst. We did exactly that, and also capitalized on several early birdie opportunities."

UNC-Pembroke is second on the team leaderboard with a 293, 14 strokes off the pace. Trailing UNCP in third place is SSC rival Florida Tech, who carded a 296 in the first round. Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) and the University of Montevallo are tied for fourth with a 297.

After Jakobsson and Coors on the individual leaderboard, Armstrong State's Nikita Arjun and UNC-Pembroke's Savannah Thompson are tied for third with a two-under 70. Seven golfers are tied with Saint Leo's Yin for fifth at even par.

Round two of the Lander Invitational takes place on Sunday, Sept. 27, at the Old South Golf Links.
