Women’s golf ninth after day 1 at Saint Leo Invite

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's golf team returned to the clubhouse in ninth place after day one of competition at the 2014 Saint Leo Invitational, Monday at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club.

The Lions carded a 315 on the par 72, 6,160-yard Lake Jovita South Course. Florida Tech, ranked No. 1 in Division II in last week's GolfStat relative rankings, sits atop the leaderboard with a four-over 292.

Six teams ranked among the GolfStat top 25 lead the field after the first round. Trailing Florida Tech is No. 8 Flagler (298), No. 4 Lynn (304), No. 16 Barry (307), No. 23 Florida Southern (309), and No. 12 California Baptist. Northwood University of Florida (313) and the University of Montevallo (314) are in seventh and eighth place respectively, ahead of Saint Leo.

Freshman Vilde Eriksen paces the Lions on the individual leaderboard tied for 14th; she carded a plus-three 75 after birdying two of the last four holes.

Freshman teammate Leah Deagle turned in a fine round and is second among Saint Leo competitors on the leaderboard. Competing as an individual and going off the 10th tee, Deagle fired a two-under 34 on the back nine and finished the day with a 77 and tied for 22nd place.

Sophomore Marie Coors and senior Clare Connolly each fired a seven-over 79 and are tied for 34th on the leaderboard. Connolly had four birdies on the day, including three on the front nine. Junior Kellianne May and senior Lauren Petty both carded rounds of 82 and are tied for 53rd, while senior Alyssa Barrett turned in a round of 108.

Florida Tech's Felicia Leftinger leads the field with a two-under 70 through 18 holes, with Northwood's Elsa Westin one stroke off the pace with a 71. Montevallo's Elaine Wood shot par in her first round, and is third on the leaderboard.

Play resumes on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. with 18 holes off split tees.
