SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University women's golf team wrapped up the first round of their home tournament on Monday after turning in a team score of 302. The Lions currently sit in third place atop the team leaderboard going into tomorrow's final round.
"We all felt pretty good going into this round," team captain Heather Petronis said. "Playing at our home course and being the defending champs gave us a lot of confidence going in."
The Lions are two strokes behind Nova Southeastern and six strokes behind Lynn, who is atop the leaderboard going into the final round. Trailing Saint Leo is Barry, who fired a 308 in the opening round. Behind the Bucs is the Mocs of Florida Southern with a 312.
Clare Connolly and Ragna Olafsdottir continued their strong fall season as both turned in cards of 74 in the opening round. Just one stroke behind the duo was Laura Huertas with a 75, and with a first round score of 79 was Petronis. Rounding out the Lions was sophomore newcomer Lauren Petty, who fired an 85 to open the tournament.
Jenna Gimbel, Alyssa Barrett, and Lauren Shuford all saw their first action of the fall today. Shuford's first performance as a Lion was very impressive, as she fired an 81 and led all individual participants. Barrett carded a 91 and Gimbel was one stroke behind her with a 92.
The Lions will be back in action again tomorrow morning at Lake Jovita, with tee times starting at 8:15 a.m.
