Lions Lead Field After First Round of Saint Leo Invitational
SAINT LEO, Fla. – The No.15-ranked Saint Leo women's golf team commanded the first round of their annual fall tournament as they posted a team score of 14-over 302 at the par-72, 6,063-yard Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club, Monday evening.
Leading the way for the front running Lions was Heather Petronis (37-36—73) as she carded a one-over 73, en route to a second place showing.
Meanwhile, Goeun Lee (40-35—75) put together a solid first round as her back-nine 35 saw her finish with a three-over 75. Equaling Lee's performance was Ragna Olafsdottir (39-36—75) as she took advantage of her home course, improving her total by three strokes over the final nine to close with an even-par 36. Both Lee and Olafsdottir each sit in a tie for fifth.
Claire Connolly (43-36—79) and Laura Huertas (40-39—79) bookended the Lions' first round as they tallied identical seven-over 79's. Connolly, like her other teammates, saw drastic improvement on the backside of her round. After opening with a 43 on the front side, the Chevy Chase, Md. native saw a seven stroke progression to close in a tie for 24th. Huertas was steady throughout her first round as she closed with a three-over 39 on the back nine.
Trailing the Lions by one stroke is Florida Southern as they registered a 15-over 303. Leading the 89-person field is the University of North Carolina-Pembroke's Meghan Moore, as she fired a one-under 71.
The Lions return to action on Tuesday, October 18, to complete the second and final round of the Saint Leo Invitational.
