SALISBURY, N.C. – The Saint Leo women’s golf team saved one of their best performances for last as they shot a team total 302 and jumped into sixth place in the final round of the 2010 NCAA South Region Tournament hosted by Catawba College at the 6,094-yard, Par-71 Country Club of Salisbury.

In one of the best showings of the season, every Lion in Coach Erika Brennan’s lineup carded in the 70’s in the final round as they were again led by sophomore Goeun Lee (73-83-76—232), whose third round 76 put her solely in 17th spot, the highest finish for SLU.

"The girls ralied today to finish our season on a high note," said Brennan, coming down from a euphoric week. "You could tell they played more relaxed and more confident today.  Having all five players shoot in the 70s was a first and hopefully a sign of things to come in the future."

Trailing Lee were teammates Anna Riss (81-79-77—237) and Suzanne Ervin (82-79-77—238) who both steadily improved their scores through each of the three rounds after opening the tournament in the 80’s.  Riss, the Lions’ only senior, was playing without a practice round after participating in Saint Leo Commencement in Florida on Saturday.  Both recovered to finish 27th and 30th respectively.

Junior Kristina Carvalho (87-78-76—241) finished in 33rd place as she shaved two strokes off of her second round score while Jordan Hatch (86-84-73—243) recovered from two bad rounds to post the best individual score on the team in round three.  The junior finished her first season at Saint Leo with a 73, 11 strokes better than her day two total.

"Its been such a joy to coach this group of ladies and to watch them develop and improve," Brennan said as she reflected on a record-breaking season. "There were a few tears shed by all as we welcomed and congratulated Anna off of her final 18th green. She will be missed."

As a team, the Lions jumped Lynn as well as Carson Newman and kept Newberry in their rearview mirror on their way to finishing their first postseason tournament in program history.

Nova Southeastern, Florida Southern and Rollins claimed the top three spots at the 2010 NCAA II Super Region 2 Women’s Golf Tournament, advancing to the National Championships at Longbow Golf Club from May 12-15 in Mesa, Arizona.

Four players tied at 226 (13-over-par) and it took two holes to decide the three to advance. All four pared the opening hole then Newberry’s Maria Luz Besio claimed her spot with a birdie on the second hole. Carley Warrington, of Belmont Abbey, was able to get up and down for a par, while Barry’s Isadora Stapff two-putted for her par to advance. The other involved in the playoff was Lizzi Over, of Barry. She hit a fairway bunker off the tee and missed a par putt.
