SAINT LEO, Fla. – After an impressive showing this past weekend, the Saint Leo University women’s golf team has found themselves 16th in the nation in the latest GolfStat poll released on Wednesday afternoon.
This jump into the Top-25 comes after the Lions missed out on the rankings in the first two poll releases after previous competitions were not reported to GolfStat in time.
Saint Leo started their season placing seventh in the 23-team Great Smokies Invitational; a tournament dominated by Division I schools, where senior Anna Riss earned a spot on the All-Tournament team.
Another seventh-place result in the NSU Shark Invitational had the Lions looking for a good-showing in their own tournament this past weekend.
In the 2009 Saint Leo Invitational, the Lions used their familiarity with the South Course at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club to post a third-place finish in the nine-team field, where Riss’ fifth-place finish again qualified her for the All-Tournament team. Riss is also ranked 32nd in the nation individually.
The Lions will take their ranking into the Flagler Fall Slam in St. Augustine this coming Monday and Tuesday. The women’s team will travel to the World Golf Village on Sunday for a practice round before the tournament starts early Monday morning.
