SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women’s golf team managed a solid third-place finish in the nine-team Saint Leo Invitational played at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club on Tuesday afternoon.
Led by senior Anna Riss (79-77—156), who posted a fifth-place individual finish in the tournament, the Lions shot a tournament total 343-328—671. They finished behind tournament champion Florida Southern (613) and second-place West Florida (666) as they improved their team score by 15 strokes compared the first round, despite the windy conditions across the course.
Riss was the team’s highest finisher as she wound up fifth overall, eight strokes behind individual champion MJ Audette (74-74—148) from Florida Southern. Despite playing with just four players after the Lions’ #2 player Jordan Hatch had to withdraw, Saint Leo managed to push past the disadvantage.
“It’s always tough playing with just four,” Head Coach Erika Brennan said. “The pressure increases because every score counts, but the ladies gutted it out in windy conditions.”
The rest of the Lions finished 30th or better in the 50-player field as junior Suzanne Ervin (90-79—169) rebounded from a rough first round to tie teammate Tricia Maloney (86-83—169) for 15th place. The SLU lineup was rounded out by junior Kristina Carvalho (88-89—177) who finished 30th.
“Suzanne has great final-round scores and Anna continues to give herself chances,” Brennan continued. “Hopefully we can get everybody healthy and have some strong practices before we head up to St. Augustine.”
The Lions will travel to St. Augustine next weekend for their next tournament. They are set to compete in the Flagler Fall Slam hosted by Flagler College with a practice round set for Sunday morning. The Lions will tee off for the two-round tournament on Monday morning.
