SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women’s golf team shot a first-round 343 and sit in third place in their own tournament, the 2009 Saint Leo Invitational, competed at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club next door to the Saint Leo campus.

The Lions trail tournament leader Florida Southern (313) and West Florida (333) on a day that started very chilly and had gusty winds and fast greens throughout.

Lions’ senior Anna Riss notched a first day 79 as she rebounded from a 42 on the front-nine to post a 37 on the back-half of the course.  She currently sits in third individually and is just five strokes behind the tournament’s lead where all the day’s scores were higher than average.

Sophomore Tricia Maloney, in a surprise performance, jumped to second on the team as she is tied for 18th with an 86.  Junior Kristina Carvalho is third on the team and 23rd overall with an 86.

Suzanne Ervin rounded out the Saint Leo lineup with a 90 as the Lions were a group featuring only four players after Jordan Hatch had to withdraw before the start of the tournament.

The Lions will look to improve on their third-place standing as they begin tomorrow’s final round.  The shotgun start will get underway at 8:30 a.m. on the South Course of Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club.
