Women's Basketball Falls in Road Play to Florida Tech

MELBOURNE, Fla. – In their last long trip of the 2013-14 regular season, the Saint Leo women's basketball team fell to the Florida Tech Panthers by an 81-63 score, Wednesday night from the Clemente Center. The loss pushed the Lions to a 14-6 overall record 5-5 in Sunshine State Conference play.

In typical fashion, Saint Leo was first on the board, thanks to a jumper from senior Chelsea Williams, who would go on to lead her team offensively in the contest. After back and forth action, however, it was Florida Tech who finished the second half with a 33-30 lead in their favor.

When the clock began ticking in the second period, Florida Tech forced an offensive attack that would allow them to surge ahead of the Lions and never look back. The forty-minute contest ended with a 81-67 score in favor of the Panthers.

Despite the loss, senior forward Chelsea Williams rallied her team offensively and scored 22 points on the night. Shooting 9-14 (64 percent) from the field, Williams also sank 4-5 of her free throw attempts and pulled down four offensive rebounds. She also tallied two blocks.

Sophomore point guard Chachi Guzman was the only other Lion to score in double digits, collecting 11 points. She also guided her team with seven assists.

Defensively, seniors Keishara Green and Chelsea Connelly each earned seven rebounds on the night.

The Lions will return to action on Saturday, February 8 when they host the visiting Barry Buccaneers. Tipoff for the Sunshine State Conference contest is set for 2:00 p.m. from the Marion Bowman Center on the campus of Saint Leo University.
