TAMPA, Fla. – In the second Sunshine State Conference matchup of 2014, the Saint Leo women's basketball team fell to theTampa Spartans by a 70-55 score, Wednesday night from the Martinez Center on the campus of the University of Tampa.
Though the Lions were the first team on the board, the Spartan offense quickly rebounded to surge ahead. The lead changed three times in the first half alone, yet Tampa walked into halftime with a 43-26 score in their favor.
After the halftime period, both squads fought for victory, yet it was the Spartans who claimed the 70-55 win. The lead never changed hands in the second half.
Senior Chelsea Williams led the Lions in scoring on the night, tallying 13 points, while Teresa Manigrasso collected 12. In addition, seniors Keishara Green and Chelsea Connelly earned nine and eight points, respectively.
Defensively, Williams also led the Lions in rebounds with nine. Sophomore Ashlin Gross followed her lead with seven on the evening.
The Lions hope to rebound on Saturday when they take on the Barry Buccaneers at the Bucs' home court in Miami Shores, Fla. Tipoff for the SSC contest is set for 4:00 p.m.
