SAINT LEO, Fla. – In an exciting Thursday night home contest, the Saint Leo women's basketball team defeated the visiting Northwood University Seahawks by a 102-80 score. The victory improved the Lions' record to a perfect 5-0 on the season and signaled the first time the squad has scored 100 points in a game since 2008.
Seniors Chelsea Connelly and Erin Higgins dominated the ball in the first half, scoring nine points apiece to lead the Lions offensively. Defensively, however, sophomore Ashlin Gross and junior Melissa Jackson combined for 10 of the 22 Saint Leo rebounds in the first half alone.
With a 45-39 lead heading into halftime, the Lions returned from the locker room and launched an offensive attack that would go unanswered for the remainder of the game. In just the second half, the Lions outscored the Seahawks 57-41.
Sophomore Ashlin Gross led the Lions in scoring with a career high 18 points, and her additional 11 rebounds earned her a first career double-double with the green and gold. Senior Chelsea Williams also tallied a double-double with a 17-point, 11-rebound effort.
Chelsea Williams, Kinnara Lewis, and Chachi Guzman each scored in the double digits as well, notching 16, 14, and 10 points, respectively. Guzman also led the team in assists with eight.
As a team, the Lions shot for 66.7 percent from behind the free-throw line, while earning a seven steals, six blocks, and 24 total assists.
The Saint Leo women's basketball team will return to action on Tuesday, November 26 when they take on the visiting U.P.R.-Bayamon Cowgirls. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
