Jessee Signs Top Notch Player, LaQuinta Jefferson

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo University head women's basketball coach Nikki Jessee is excited to announce her first signee for the incoming 2014 class. The announcement comes just two games into the Lions' 2013-14 season, where Jessee's squad currently holds a 2-0 record.

LaQuinta Jefferson, the newest addition to the green and gold, will have a large impact on the Lions' squad when she takes the court for the 2014-15 year.

La Vergne, Tenn.
Jefferson College

Hailing from La Vergne, Tennessee, Jefferson attended La Vergne High School where she was a three-year starter and a three-time selection to the Daily News Journal's All-Area Team. In 2009, she was a Tennessee Sports Writer's Association All-State Recipient and posted 17.4 points per game to lead La Vergne HS to a 22-9 overall record. Jefferson was also ranked the number 64 high school prospect in America for the Class of 2010 by ESPN Hoop Gurlz.

Prior to her high school graduation, Jefferson committed to the University of Kentucky, but chose instead to further her skill at Gulf Coast Community College in Panama City, Fla. After one season, Jefferson transferred to Jefferson College in Hillsboro, Mo. where she had a stellar sophomore season. At Jefferson, she average 17.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 2.9 steals per game, leading the Lady Vikings to a 31-5 record and a National Junior College Tournament berth. In just two games at the Region 16 tournament, Jefferson herself tallied 48 points, earning her NJCAA All-Tournament Team honors and a spot on the Women's Basketball Coaches' Association Junior College All-America team. For her efforts, Jefferson was also one of three finalists for the WBCA National Junior College Player of the Year award.

After an impactful performance at Jefferson College, she committed to Louisiana State University, but opted instead for the balance of an NCAA Division II institution by signing with the Saint Leo Lions. She will become a member of the team in January of 2014, but will not compete until the 2014-15 season.

Jessee's thoughts: "LaQuinta is a special player who will make a major impact on our program right away.  She is a 6 foot guard who can play a number of positions because of her versatility.  LaQuinta has excelled at a national level everywhere she has played, whether it be high school, AAU, or junior college. We're excited to have a player of her caliber be a part of our program in the spring practicing and working out, and then still having two years of eligibility remaining.  We hope to help her get a head start on her academics, as well as learning our system and the way we do things at Saint Leo.  The sky is the limit for her regarding her basketball skills, and we plan on helping her become the best possible player she is capable of becoming over the next two and half years of her wearing green and gold."
