Eckerd Tops Saint Leo on Senior Night, 64-62
SAINT LEO, Fla. – In a tightly contested regular season women's basketball finale, the Lions (12-14, 7-9 SSC) fell to the Eckerd College Tritons by a score of 64-62, on Senior Night.
Despite a close first half that saw six lead changes, the Lions found themselves trailing by seven going into the half. Teresa Manigrasso led the first half for the Lions, scoring 10 points while shooting 5-10 from the field. Chelsea Connelly and Christina Granville were leaders on the boards for the Lions—grabbing four boards a piece in the opening half.
Overall, the Lions shot an astounding 50 percent from the field in the first half. However, they failed to get anything going from beyond the arc, missing on all three attempts.
In the second half, the Lions stormed back to tie it 45-45 with 11:12 remaining in the game. A key to their success was offensive balance, as every player seemed to get in on the action. Minutes later, Manigrasso made a hard drive into the paint for a layup that sent The Bowman Center wild. The Lions had taken their first lead of the half, 53-52 with 5:27 left to play. The Tritons later regained the advantage, holding a manageable lead of four with time winding down. The Lions made a last-ditch effort as Connelly nailed a three point shot that left them down by a lone point with 1:36 left to go.
In the end, it was not enough as the Tritons fended off the surging Lions for a 64-62 win. Despite the Lions leading in all major shooting categories, they still found themselves down at the end of the game. Manigrasso led the Lions in points with 19, shooting 8-15 from the field. Connelly finished with a double-double, posting 15 points and 10 rebounds. On the other side, the Tritons were led by Krystal Charles who finished 9-20 from the field for 22 points.
With the loss, the Lions finish regular season play as they look to rebound heading into the conference tournament.
