SAINT LEO, Fla. – The women's basketball team (10-8, 5-3 SSC) topped the Rollins College Tars (11-4, 2-5 SSC) 52-48 on Saturday afternoon from the Bowman Center. The win for the Lions was the first win over Rollins since the 1997-98 season when the Lions beat the Tars in Winter Park.
In the win Saint Leo had three players score in double figures—with Teresa Manigrasso and Kinnara Lewis scoring 18 and 17 points, respectively. Keishara Green contributed 11 points and nine rebounds, while Chelsea Connelly tied her career high after with 16 rebounds.
The first half was the Kinnara Lewis show as the sophomore from Miami dominated the Tars—going 3-for-6 from behind the arc and totaling a game-high 13 first half points to lead her squad into the half with a 30-17 lead. Manigrasso added nine points and three assists, while leading the defensive effort in the half with two steals. Green—with confidence carrying over from her double-double performance against Eckerd—tallied six points and four rebounds in the opening period.
The Lions were outscored in the second half, but continued to come up with baskets when they needed them. Leading by as many as 15 at one point, the Tars came roaring back to get within three with 5:27 remaining. Following a Manigrasso jumper, Lewis scored the next four points to stretch the Saint Leo lead back to nine. The Tars were able to make one final run and cut the lead to four with under a minute to play, but the Lions were able to hold off the Tars to earn their fifth Sunshine State Conference win.
Saint Leo dominated the Tars in the paint—outscoring them 26-8 in the key. The Lions were also able to capitalize on some steals, as they scored 11 points off of Tars' turnovers and 10 points on fast breaks.
The women's basketball team gets back in action next Saturday, Feb. 2 when they travel to Ft. Lauderdale to take on the Nova Southeastern Sharks. Tipoff is slated for 2:00 p.m.
