SAINT LEO, Fla. - The Saint Leo women's basketball team (7-6, 2-1 SSC) defeated Florida Southern (7-5, 2-1 SSC) by a score of 56-46 on Wednesday evening at the Marion Bowman Center. The night featured senior forward Keishara Green's 11 point effort, surpassing her previous season-high of nine points.
Saint Leo started the attack at tip off, and didn't stop. Senior Elise Clyburn sank her first three point shot of the game, putting the Lions on top right from the get go. From there on out the Lions only lost the lead once. Clyburn added five more points throughout the night, and Chelsea Connelly added 10 points, nine rebounds, and three assists in the winning effort. Chelsea Williams contributed seven points and eight rebounds on the night.
Teresea Manigrasso dropped in nine points and six rebounds of her own in addition to three assists. Christina Granville scored six points (3-of-4 shooting) and grabbed four rebounds on the night.
The Lions shot 48 percent from the field in the first half, and held Florida Southern to just 28 percent shooting. The Lions strong defense in the first half combined with their team offensive effort, allowed them to take a 33-18 lead into the break.
In the second half the Lions continued their hot shooting, extending the lead to 21 just two minutes into the second half. The Lions continued playing great defense, and held Kirstin McIntyre to three second half points, after she scored 12 in the first half. The Lions lead as by many 22 during the game, and held off a late rally from the Mocs to get their second Sunshine State win of the season.
The Lions get back in action on Saturday when they travel to Miami Shores to face Barry University. Tip off it set for 2:00 p.m.
