BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's basketball team (6-13, 0-9 SSC) fell to the Lynn University Fighting Knights (11-9, 6-4 SSC), 62-52, Wednesday evening from the de Hoernle Center in Sunshine State Conference action.
Despite holding the lead for a majority of the opening stanza, a late first half scoring draught, coupled with a 14-3 Fighting Knights run early in the second half, propelled the host Fighting Knights to the double-digit win.
In a low-scoring first half, the Lions saw outstanding efforts from Williams and Sarah Winans as the duo combined for 14 points, including eight from Williams. The Lions connected on three, three-pointers and turned the ball over a first half, season-low three times. Over the course of the opening 20 minutes the Lions gradually built a lead culminating with Winans sinking a three-point basket to give the a Lions six-point, 21-15, lead. The Fighting Knights countered with an 8-0 run over the final eight minutes of the half to go into the break up two points, 23-21.
Lynn began the second half red-hot as they opened the period by scoring 19 of the first 24 points to take a 44-26 lead with 11:28 to play. A resilient Lions' defense halted the Lynn run as their offense began to inch them back into the game. Holding the Fighting Knights to just five points over the next four minutes, Saint Leo saw strong interior play by Williams, as well as a clutch three-point basket by Clyburn, to cut the advantage to single digits with 6:40 to play.
Unfortunately for the Lions' faithful in attendance, Saint Leo could not slice the lead anymore as Lynn maintained its running lead of 14 over the remaining portions of the contest.
The Lions shot 31 percent for the game (19-of-60), and were out-rebounded, 39-36. Lynn converted 19 points off of 14 Saint Leo turnovers, while registering nine blocks.
The Lions will return to action on Saturday, February 4, when they host Florida Tech from the Marion Bowman Activities Center. The SSC showdown is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
