Women’s Basketball Downed by Florida Tech, 97-62, in SSC Action

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's basketball team (6-7, 0-3 SSC) fell to the Florida Tech Panthers (10-4, 1-3 SSC), 97-62, Saturday afternoon in Sunshine State Conference action from the Clemente Center on the campus of Florida Tech.

The tone for the game was set early as Lions' turnovers and precision Panthers' shooting allowed Florida Tech to build as much as a 25-point first half lead In total, 22 Saint Leo turnovers led to 32 points for the Panthers, allowing them to solidify the win. 

The Lions offensive struggles were evident from the beginning as they were faced with an immediate deficit, as two missed layups and three turnovers allowed the Panthers to grab an 8-2 lead. Florida Tech took advantage of the early edge and soon built a double-digit lead, 27-13, midway through the first half.

Florida Tech continued to put pressure on the usually stout Lions' defense as they went on to post 52 points over the opening 20 minutes.  

The Lions' offense did, however, catch fire in the second half as they connected on 57 percent (17-for-30) of their shots. Still, it was not enough as the Panthers outscored the Lions by 11 points, 45-34, over the course of the final 20 minutes to bring the score to its final.

The loss negated an outstanding shooting day from Shalisa Hill as she poured-in a Saint Leo best 18 points. Meanwhile, Chelsea Williams and Sarah Winans bucketed 14 and 12, respectively.

Florida Tech featured four double-digit scorers, including a team-high 17 points from Briauna Hagins.

Overall, Florida Tech out-rebounded the Lions 41-28, while the Lions dominated the paint with 42 points.

Saint Leo will return to action on Wednesday, January 11, when they host rival Florida Southern College in a Sunshine State Conference tilt. Tip-off between the Lions and Moccasins is set for 5:30 p.m.
