SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's basketball team (6-1) suffered its first loss of the season as they dropped a 59-46 decision to the Newberry College Wolves (6-2), Tuesday afternoon from the Marion Bowman Activities Center.

The non-region contest saw the Wolves register an 18-0 run to begin the game, as they led the game from begining to end. For Saint Leo, Kinnara Lewis bucketed a Lions' best 14 points, while Christina Granville chipped in 12 points and seven boards, and Chelsea Connelly led all rebounders with 12. For the Wolves, Neicey Lewis led all scorers with 24 points.

It was not the start the Lions were anticipating as Newberry's perimeter shooting found its target early and often as they built an 18-0 lead. Turnovers kept the Lions on their heels for the remaining of the opening period as Newberry kept an 18-point buffer heading into the halftime break as they scored 17 points off of 12 Lions' turnovers.

The 37-19 lead was short-lived, however, as an aggressive Lions' bunch played stout defense and connected on timely baskets to draw them back into the contest. Granville's jumper with 17:57 left in the second sparked a 15-4 run cutting the Wolves' lead to eight, 44-36, with 7:19 to play. After briefly cutting the lead to a game-low six points with under two minutes to play, the Wolves regained momentum and iced the game at the free throw line by hitting 11-of-12 shots, holding onto the 13-point win.

The Lions held a 38-37 rebound advantage and hit on 4-of-8 three-point field goals.

Up next, the Lions will hit the road for the first time in 2011-12 as they travel to Lakeland, Fla. to compete in the Florida Southern Classic. The Lions will challenge Gulf South Conference opponent Alabama-Huntsville on Sunday, December 18, in the opening game of the tournament.
