SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's basketball team (3-0) held the visiting University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon Cowgirls to just 26 percent shooting as the Lions collected a 60-37 in-region victory, Wednesday afternoon from the Marion Bowman Activities Center.  The Lions remain undefeated to start to 2011-12 season.

In the pre-Thanksgiving Day contest, an 11-0 second half run highlighted the Lions 23-point victory.

"Any win is a good win," stated Head Coach Nikki Jessee. "We still need to play better defensively and learn to be more disciplined, but I am also happy more players are getting playing time and contributing positively to the game."

A sluggish first half, the Lions and Cowgirls exchanged baskets in the early moments of the contest with Bayamon grabbing their largest lead of the contest, 8-5, with 13:08 to play in the opening period. Shortly after, the Lions began to turn back the Bayamon offensive charge as Sarah Winans buried one of her two three-point-baskets to give the Green and Gold a 10-8 advantage.

The shot ignited an 11-2 run by the Lions. The nine-point advantage put the Saint Leo in the driver's seat as they extended their lead to 13, 31-18, by the end of the period.

Featuring a much more balanced attack in the second half, Winans again ignited an 11-0 run, which featured five different scorers, to start the second period.

The Lions took a 20-point running margin throughout the remainder of the game before closing-out their largest win of the season at 23 points.

Additionally, the Lions committed just seven turnovers in the second half and held Bayamon to five free throw attempts for the game.

In victory, Saint Leo tallied 18 points off of 20 Bayamon turnovers, contributed 26 points from the paint, and outscored Bayamon, 18-4, off the bench.

The Lions will return to action on Saturday, November 26, when they host the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. For the latest news, information, and updates on the women's basketball team, visit
