SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo Women's Basketball Coach Nikki Jessee has announced the signings of Rachel Burnett (Largo, Fla.), Christina Granville (Clewiston, Fla.), Kinnara Lewis (Miami, Fla.), and Sarah Winans (Mount Prospect, Ill.) to National Letters of Intent. The quartet, consisting of three freshmen and one transfer, will hit the floor for the Lions in 2011-12.
"I am excited about this incoming group," stated Jessee. These recruits add athleticism to our lineup with the ability to create off the dribble, as well as the skill to knock down the open three. If they defend and rebound, all will have the opportunity to play right away and have us competing at a high level."
Making up Jessee's inaugural cast are a pair of forwards, as well as two guards.
Indian Rocks Christian High School
Burnett was a four-year starter at Indian Rocks where she led her team to a pair of Elite-Eight appearances during her junior and senior years. In 2010, Thanksgiving and Christmas Tournaments saw her earn all-tournament team honors, in addition to receiving the Total Release Award from her high school. Furthermore, the Clearwater, Fla. native was selected to compete in the 2011 Pinellas County All-Star game where she was named game-MVP. Also, the forward earned a spot on the Pinellas squad for the 2011 Pinellas/Hillsborough All-Star Game.
Burnett capped her career by being named All-Pinellas County First Team, All-Suncoast Honorable Mention, and Florida Association of Basketball Coaches (FABC) 2A All-State teams.
In total, the six-footer eclipsed the 1,000 point mark for her career tallying 1,317 points.
Jessee's Perspective: "Rachel is our sleeper. I think she will surprise a lot of people with her development over the course of her 4-year career here at Saint Leo. She has the touch to shoot outside, the size to bang inside, and she is able to put the ball on the ground."
Jefferson College/Glades Central Community High School
A high school standout, Granville was selected all-area, all-conference, and all-district during each of her four seasons at Glades Central Community. As a senior, she participated in the county all-star game while also earning 'Best Defensive Player' accolades.
At Jefferson College, the forward was the team's leading rebounder at 8.0 rebounds-per-game. Offensively, Granville shot 52 percent from the floor and averaged 9.0 points-per-game.
Jessee's Perspective: "Christina is an athletic, lanky post player who can run the floor, defend and rebound at the forward position. Her athleticism, maturity, and work ethic will make it hard to keep her off the floor."
Monsignor Edward Pace High School
A two-time selectee to the All-Miami Herald squad, Lewis joins the Lions as a highly talented guard from Monsignor Edward Pace High School in Miami-Dade County. Earning All-Dade County First Team honors once, Lewis also produced First Team All-State accolades. In addition, the guard played for one of the top AAU units in the state, Team Breakdown, where she averaged 15 points, four assists and two steals per game.
Jessee's Perspective: "Kinnara is an impact player who I expect to contribute in a big way immediately. I'm excited to have a player of Kinnara's ability who can shoot the 3, create off the dribble, and defend. Her quickness and scoring ability will make her hard to defend."
Mount Perspective, Ill.
Prospect High School
Winans is a two-time Daily Herald All-Area Team honoree, as well as a two-time Mid-Suburban League All-Conference selection. In addition, the Illinois standout is a two-time Dundee Crown All-Tournament pick.
At Prospect High School, Winans took to the court as a varsity member of the girls' basketball team in each of her four seasons and was a two-time co-captain. She averaged 12 points, four boards, and four assists per game.
In addition, she earned a spot in the section finals of the area three-point contest and also aided her U-14 AAU squad, the Full Package, to a state championship.
Jessee's Perspective: "Sarah is a truly fundamental player who will bring depth to the point guard and shooting guard positions. With her shooting and ability to create, I expect to her to make an immediate impact this upcoming season."
