WINTER PARK, Fla. – Despite 11 points from Sierra Williams, the Saint Leo women’s basketball team (11-6, 4-3 SSC) could not overcome a 16-point half time deficit, falling to the Rollins Tars (12-5, SSC), 64-50, Saturday afternoon from the Alfond Sports Center.
As a team, Sierra Williams lead the way with 11 points and nine rebounds. Gekeela Clemmons’ scored nine points and added six rebounds. Brittany Carannante amassed had points while Wilanda Windham and Dominique Daniels both scored six points.
The Lions, despite fighting back the entire contest, could not stop the Tars’ second chance opportunities. The Tars out-rebounded the Green & Gold by seven and shot a better percentage from the floor (32.7%-to-37.3%). The Lions, however, did shoot 72 percent from the free throw line (13-of-18) for the game. The Lions committed 24 turnovers in the SSC battle, dropping their fourth game in the last six tries.
Rollins took advantage of by the Lions slow start offensively, taking an 8-1 lead. Saint Leo didn't see their first field goal of the first half until Carannante deleived the bucket at the 14:02 mark.
Rollins steadily increased their lead over the first half, expanding it to 10 with 9:34 to play. Offense was at a premium for the Lions, as missed shots and costly turnovers allowed the Tars to gather a 16-point lead, growing it to 40-18 advantage with 2:47 left in the period.
Williams and the three-point shooting of Brianna Lollis allowed SLU to close the lead to 17, 40-23, going into the break.
Out of the break, the Tars kept a stronghold on their 17-point lead until Saint Leo, led by Carannante, Clemmons, and Joanna Bussa, scored nine-straight points to cut the lead to eight, 47-39.
Still, SLU, while contemplating another second comeback, were blitz again by the Rollins offense. The Tars responded with an 8-2 run of their own pushing the lead back to 14. The Tars kept the running lead for the majority of the game, closing with a 64-50 win.
The Lions will continue their road trip on Wednesday when they travel to Miami Shores, Fla. to take on Barry in SSC action. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
