SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University women’s basketball team (10-11, 2-9 SSC) used a pair of double-doubles from Marquita Fenn and Dominique Daniels to gain a 12-point Sunshine State Conference victory over the Florida Tech Panthers (16-6, 5-6 SSC) Saturday afternoon at the Bowman Center.

With a five point lead at the half, the Lions exploded for 42 points in the second en route to the 12 point victory over the Panthers.

Despite Florida Tech leading for the majority of the first five minutes, the Lions, backed by a 12 point first half by Daniels, began to take charge.

The Lions took their first lead of the game with 15:12 remaining in the half and held onto it until the seven minute mark. Natalie Gaudreau gave the Lions their largest lead of the half, 6, with 12 minutes remaining by connecting on a three-point basket.

The Panthers responded with a 9-2 run to give Tech a six-point lead with 2:43 to go. But the Lions put the breaks on the run and did not allow a repeat of their first meeting to occur by finishing the half on 11-0 run of their own. The inside duo of Fenn and Daniels combined for all the points, including making all seven of their free throw attempts.

With all the momentum on their side, the Lions offense exploded to take an 11-point lead with 14:24 left in the game. Sabrina Schmitt stretched the Lions lead to 14 with 11 minutes to play by connecting on back-to-back baskets.

The hot shooting continued as Monique Reynard converted four straight points to give the Lions what would be their largest lead of the game, 17.

The SLU offense remained steady while playing strong defense, only allowing Florida Tech to break the Lions’ double-digit lead once during the remaining ten minutes.

Daniels and Fenn combined to score 34 points and were all over the glass with 22 total rebounds. Reynard was only one point off of Fenn’s pace scoring 14 points (5-for-10). Sierra Williams and Schmitt chipped in 10 points apiece to round out five Lions’ players who scored in double-digits.

SLU scorched the nets shooting 50 percent (28-for-56) for the day while out-rebounding Florida Tech 48-to-36.

The Lions continue SSC action this Wednesday, February 11 as they travel to Lakeland, Fla. to take on the Florida Southern College Moccasins. The game will be broadcasted live on the Saint Leo Lions AudioCast Network.
