SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University women’s basketball team (5-0), continued their unbeaten streak with a 77-47 victory over the University of Puerto Rico – Rio Piedras, Saturday evening from the Marion Bowman Activities Center.

SLU immediately took charge during the first half, staking to a 12-4 lead off of tremendous inside play from Dominique Daniels, as she hit her first three attempts from inside the paint. Rio Piedras maintained their composure and began to claw their way back into the game, closing to gap to one, 16-15.

Minutes later, Senior Melissa Guerero hit a jumper at the top of the key stopping the Rio Piedras streak and pushing the momentum back on the side of the home team. Guerero finished the half with 11 points, as the Lions wrapped up a 24-9 run to close out the half.

Out of the locker room, Saint Leo continued to force the issue on the offensive end scoring 14 of the first 22 points, as Guerero and Monique Reynard combined for nine points during the stretch.

With the score 63-40 in favor of SLU, the Lions defense ended all hopes of a comeback, holding Rio Piedras from scoring for a five minute stretch during the final ten minutes of the game. Senior Nichole Tyler along with Guerero, solidified the victory for Saint Leo, as the two combined to go 4-for-4 from the free throw line.

The Lions defense was impressive yet again, forcing 34 turnovers and turning them into 23 Saint Leo points. The Lions went 5-for-9 from behind the arch and made 16 of 24 free throws.

Saint Leo’s bench came through in the clutch for the second straight night, outscoring Rio Piedras 39-18. SLU posted a season high five team blocks, including two by Sabrina Schmitt.

Guerero led the Lions in scoring with 17 points. Daniels totaled 14 points and five rebounds while Whitley Washington dished out eight assists on top of seven points and four rebounds. Lauren Lee had a solid game, as well, scoring nine points while Reynard chipped in eight.

The Lions take their undefeated show to the road when they travel to Palm Beach, Fla. to take on the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish. The non-conference game is scheduled to tip-off at 5:00 pm.
