Melbourne, Fla. (March 1, 2008) – The Saint Leo University women’s basketball team (13-14, 6-10 SSC) was downed 67-60 by Florida Tech (12-15, 4-12 SSC) on Saturday afternoon in the 2007-08 regular season finale in Melbourne, Fla.
The loss pushed Saint Leo to the number seven seed for the upcoming SSC Tournament. The Lions will travel to face second-seeded Tampa in the quarterfinal stage on Tuesday evening. Official tournament brackets, game times and opponents will be released tomorrow by the Sunshine State Conference.
Saint Leo was led by junior Melissa Guerero (Trinidad & Tobago) who recorded her second consecutive double-double with a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Lauren Lee (Clearwater, Fla.) added 10 points in defeat for the Lions.
The Lions never led in the contest, and the only ties came in the first minutes of the game. Tech broke a 6-6 tie to take the lead for good with 13:07 left in the first half. The Panthers stretched their lead to as many as 11 points in the first half, but the Lions closed the half on a 6-0 run to make it a 35-30 Tech lead at half.
Following the half-time break, Tech scored the first nine points of the second half to open up the largest lead of the game. However, Saint Leo countered with a 9-0 run of its own and scored 12 of the next 13 points overall to trim the deficit to three points with 12:30 left in the game.
The Panthers pushed the lead back to 14 with a 13-2 run, effectively putting the game out of reach. Saint Leo did close to within four with 30 seconds left but Tech’s Kristin Heminger went 3-for-5 from the free throw line in the closing stages to provide the final margin.
