Saint Leo, Fla. (February 13, 2008) – Melissa Guerero (Jr., Trinidad & Tobago) capped off a 22-point performance with the game-winning jumper with 3.7 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Saint Leo women’s basketball team (11-11, 4-7 SSC) a 75-73 OT win over visiting Tampa (17-5, 9-3 SSC) on Wednesday night in a Sunshine State Conference game at the Bowman Center.  The win was the second straight close victory for the Lions.

Nichole Tyler (Jr., Van Etten, N.Y.) led all scorers in the contest with 27 points, including a pair of free throws with five seconds left in regulation to force overtime.  Tyler was 8-of-12 from the floor, including 6-of-8 from beyond the three-point arc, while Guerero was just as hot shooting 10-of-17 from the field in the game.

Tampa opened the game on an 11-2 run and led throughout the game.  The Spartans led by as many as 15 points in the opening half, and eventually went into half-time with a 38-26 lead.

UT built its lead to a game-high 17 points with 13:11 remaining in the game before Saint Leo began its comeback.  The Lions went on a 25-5 run to take their first lead of the game, and led by three following a jumper by Guerero with 3:09 left in the game.  The lead exchanged hands three times in the closing minutes before Tyler was fouled while in the act of shooting a three-pointer.  The junior made the final two free throws to send the game to overtime.

The Lions never trailed in the overtime, scoring the opening points on a jumper by Guerero.  Guerero and Lauren Lee (Fr., Clearwater, Fla.) combined to score all 11 points for SLU in the OT with Guerero scoring six and Lee adding five.  After Tampa had tied the game at 73 on a three-pointer by Hailee Sullivan, Guerero hit the game-winning field goal on a jumper with five seconds remaining.  The Lions did not allow the Spartans to get off a shot in the closing second, preserving the second straight win.

The Lions will hit the road this weekend to travel to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. where they will face Nova Southeastern University on Saturday.  Opening tip is schedule for 5:30 p.m.
