Saint Leo, Fla. (February 9, 2008) – Freshman Whitley Washington (Gainesville, Fla.) hit a three-pointer with 0.6 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Saint Leo women’s basketball team (10-11, 3-7 SSC) to a 60-59 Sunshine State Conference win over visiting Lynn University (16-6, 7-4 SSC) on Saturday afternoon.
Despite trailing for the majority of the second half, the Lions pulled to within one late. Following a missed free throw by Lynn’s Jade Williams with eight-seconds left in the contest, Saint Leo’s Dominique Daniels (So., Columbus, Ohio) pulled down her eighth rebound of the game. Washington caught the outlet pass and with time winding down launched a shot from beyond the arch that banked in to give the Lions the win.
Saint Leo pulled out to an early lead in the contest, stretching the advantage to as many as 12 points in the opening stanza. However, Lynn used a 12-2 run to make it a two-point lead late in the first half. A lay-up by Melissa Guerero (Jr., Trinidad & Tobago) with 30-seconds left in the half capped a 13-point first half for the junior and gave the Lions a four-point lead at half-time.
Lynn came back early in the second half, eventually taking the lead with a three-pointer by Liz Roth with 14:03 left in the game. The visitors led by seven with 5:10 remaining in the game. The Lions continued to battle and with time winding down got the second game-winning bucket of the season from Washington late.
The Lions will remain at home for their next contest, hosting the University of Tampa on Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m.
