Saint Leo, Fla. (January 30, 2008) – The Saint Leo University women’s basketball team (9-10, 2-6 SSC) overcame visiting Florida Tech (10-9, 2-6 SSC) by a score o 78-62 on Wednesday night in Sunshine State Conference action at the Bowman Center.
Four Lions scored in double figures to lead the team to the win. Dominique Daniels (So., Columbus, Ohio) led the way with a game-high 17 points, while Nichole Tyler (Jr., Van Etten, N.Y.) had her second straight double-digit scoring performance with 13 points. Sabrina Schmitt (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) and Amanda Holloway (Sr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) each added 12 points in the win.
Kristin Heminger led the visiting Panthers with a double-double in defeat. Heminger scored 15 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Caselle Russell added 13 points, and Lynisha Nelson scored 11 points for the visitors.
Saint Leo led from the opening tip, as Tyler opened the scoring with a three-pointer. The Lions held a running margin of five points throughout the opening half, stretching the lead to as many as nine points. SLU took a 30-26 advantage into the locker room at half-time.
The Lions continued to keep the lead around six points for much of the second half, pushing the lead to 14 points with 4:33 remaining in the game. Tech closed the gap to eight with 1:45 left in the contest, but the Lions finished the game on an 8-0 run to provide the largest lead and the final margin at 16 points.
Saint Leo used solid free throw shooting in the second half to secure the victory, as the Lions were 24-of-35 (68.6%) from the free throw line in the second half alone, and 26-of-37 (70.3%) for the game. SLU held a slight 40-39 edge in rebounding, and the Lion bench was able to outscore the Panther bench 30-13 for the game.
Saint Leo will enjoy a one week break before resuming its Sunshine State Conference schedule next Wednesday, February 6 at Rollins College. Opening tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Winter Park, Fla.
