Miami Shores, Fla. (January 26, 2008) – The Saint Leo University women’s basketball team (8-10, 1-6 SSC) fell 51-46 on the road to Barry University on Saturday afternoon in Miami Shores, Fla.
Nichole Tyler (Jr., Van Etten, N.Y.) scored a season-high 15 points, including 12 second half points but the Lions were unable to complete a second half rally. Whitley Washington (Fr., Gainesville, Fla.) grabbed a game and career-high 12 rebounds for the Lions. Princess Bailey led the Bucs to the win with a game-high 16 points
After Barry scored the opening five points of the contest, Saint Leo went on a 6-0 run to take a one-point lead. However, that was the only lead the Lions had in the game. Bailey gave the Bucs their largest lead of the game with a bucket at the end of the first half to send the home team into the locker room with a 15-point lead.
The Lions came roaring back in the second half, opening with a 13-2 run and eventually tying the game at 38 with 9:19 remaining. Tyler hit two three-pointers during the stretch to key the run, while Washington buried a trey to tie the game. Barry answered by scoring eight of the next nine points, but again the Lions battled back and made it a three-point game with 1:07 on the strength of five straight points from Tyler. Barry sealed the win with a lay-up by Kia Palmer with nine seconds left to provide the final margin.
The Lions will return home to face Florida Tech in another Sunshine State Conference game on Wednesday, January 30 at 5:30 p.m.
