Lakeland, Fla. (December 20, 2007) – The Saint Leo women’s basketball team (7-2) won its fourth straight game, and eclipsed its win total from the entire 2006-07 season with a 62-58 win over Georgia Southwestern State (1-8) on Thursday at the Florida Southern Classic in Lakeland, Fla.
Amanda Holloway (Sr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) scored in double figures for the ninth time in 2007-08, as she scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Lions to the win. Melissa Guerero (Jr., Trinidad & Tobago) added 12 points and five rebounds in the win.
GSW was led by Brittany Reynolds who scored 17 points. Also in double figures for the Hurricanes were Ivana Udovalieva (11 points) and Brynne Callaway (10 points).
Saint Leo scored the first eight points of the game, and never trailed en route to a fourth straight victory. The Lions raced to a 14 point lead in the opening half, and led by as many as 15 points in the first stanza. Eventually, Saint Leo took a 33-20 lead into the half-time locker room, as Holloway scored 13 points in the first 20 minutes.
The Lions stretched the lead to a game-high 18 points with a 9-0 run early in the second half. The lead reached 18 twice more before Georgia Southwestern put together an 18-4 run to close to within three points with 5:23 remaining. The Hurricanes trimmed the lead to two on a jumper by Reynolds with 1:47 left, but SLU freshman Lauren Lee (Clearwater, Fla.) drained a pair free throws with six seconds left to lift the Lions to the win.
Saint Leo will head to Florence, Ala. for tournament action hosted by the University of North Alabama on December 29-30. The Lions will face UNA on December 29 at 4:00 p.m. ET and the University of Alabama-Huntsville on Sunday, December 30 at 2:00 p.m. ET.
