Saint Leo, Fla. (November 16, 2007) – The Saint Leo University women’s basketball team (1-0) opened its 2007-08 season with a 75-46 victory over visiting University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras (0-1) in the opening game of the 2007 Sleep Inn Classic on Friday night.
Amanda Holloway (Sr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) scored a game-high 19 points off the bench to key the win, while junior Sabrina Schmitt (Tampa, Fla.) added 10 points and eight rebounds in the win.
Rio Piedras hung tough in the opening half, as the visitors led by as many as eight points in the opening half. However, the Lions closed the half on 5-1 run to take a 34-30 lead at the break.
The Lions came out of the half-time locker room and put the game to rest in the opening seven minutes of the second half, as they went on a 20-3 run to open the second frame. The lead continued to grow in the second half, as Holloway scored 11 of her 19 points after the break. The final margin of 29 marked the largest lead of the night.
Saint Leo shot 46.3% (31-of-67) for the game and outrebounded Rio Piedras 47-38, including a 19-16 edge in offensive boards. The Lions had a commanding 36-10 lead in points in the paint, and also took advantage of the visiting team’s 26 turnovers by outscoring their opponents 27-7 in points off of turnovers.
Saint Leo will face the University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon tomorrow in the final game of the 2007 Sleep Inn Classic. Opening tip is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the Bowman Center, and will be the second half of a doubleheader featuring the Saint Leo men versus the UPR-Bayamon men at 2:00 p.m.
