Saint Leo, Fla. (November 1, 2007) - The Saint Leo women’s basketball team was selected eighth in the 2007-08 Sunshine State Conference Pre-Season Poll, it was announced Thursday. 2007 Tournament Champion Tampa has been selected as the preseason favorite to win the 2007-08 Sunshine State Conference Women’s Basketball Championship.
The Lions finished the 2006-07 season with a 6-22 record overall and their 3-13 record in league play was good for an eighth-place finish in the SSC. Head coach Chanita Olds enters her third season at the helm and returns seven players while adding several new faces. A pair of junior transfers highlights the list of incoming players, which also includes five true freshmen.
Saint Leo will open its 2007-08 season at home with the Sleep Inn Classic when the Lions host the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras and the University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon on Friday, November 16 (7:30 p.m.) and Saturday, November 17 (4:00 p.m.). The Lions Sunshine State Conference schedule will begin at home versus defending SSC Co-Champion Rollins College on Saturday, January 5 at 2:00 p.m.
With 34 points, the Tampa edged out Rollins, which received 39 points. Defending Co-Champion Florida Tech (56) was picked third, followed by Barry (84) and Nova Southeastern (94). Florida Southern (98) was tabbed sixth, and Lynn (103) was slated seventh. Saint Leo (146) and Eckerd (156) rounded out the poll.
Voting for the women’s basketball preseason poll was conducted among the league’s head women’s basketball coaches and sports information directors.
