Boca Raton, Fla. (February 24, 2007) – The Saint Leo women’s basketball team (6-21, 3-13 SSC) wrapped up its 2006-07 regular season with a 68-60 Sunshine State Conference loss at Lynn University (17-10, 9-7 SSC) on Saturday.
Four Saint Leo players scored in double figures, led by freshman Dominique Daniels’ (Columbus, Ohio) career-high 13 points. SLU forward Marquita Fenn (Jr., Ft. Pierce, Fla.) and Chemeka Amos (Sr., Zephyrhills, Fla.) each scored 12 points, while Melissa Guerero (So., Trinidad & Tobago) rounded out the quartet in double digits with 10 points.
Lynn’s Sarah Mahan led all scorers with 22 points and Crystal Ahmed added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The game was close throughout the opening half with eight tie scores and neither team able to pull away. Lynn eventually took a one-point margin into the half-time locker room at 33-32.
Saint Leo scored the opening two buckets of the second half, but Lynn put together an 11-0 run highlighted by five Mahan points. The Lions pulled to within two points at 44-42 after Daniels converted on two free-throws and hit a jumper in traffic but Ahmed answered back with a coast-to-coast lay-up and Shamonica Adams nailed two from the charity stripe to extend her team’s lead to six.
Mahan pushed the score to 53-43 with nine minutes remaining when she hit her fourth trey of the contest. The Lions chipped away at the lead getting as close as six points before Lynn kicked it into overdrive. The lead grew to as many as 15 points down the stretch.
Saint Leo will return to the de Hoernle Center in Boca Raton on Wednesday night to face Eckerd College in the opening round of the 2007 Sunshine State Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament. Opening tip for the game between the number eight and nine seeds is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
