Saint Leo, Fla. (January 27, 2007) - Led by junior guard Roni Carither's (Tampa, Fla.), the Saint Leo women's basketball team (5-13, 3-5 SSC) posted its second straight victory with a 74-63 win over SSC foe Lynn University (11-7, 3-5 SSC) at the Bowman Center on Saturday.
Also contributing double-figure scoring for the Lions were sophomore Melissa Guerero (Trinidad & Tobago) and junior Amanda Holloway (West Palm Beach, Fla.) with 11 points and 10 points, respectively. Junior forward Marquita Fenn (Ft. Pierce, Fla.) added a game 12 rebounds and nine points in the win.
The first half was close with the lead changing hands eight times and four tie scores. However, after Lynn led 16-15 with 8:43 left in then half, the Lions took the lead for good with a 13-0 run that opened a 12-point lead. SLU eventually went into the locker room with a 29-21 lead.
The Fighting Knights would get no closer than seven points in the second half, as the Lions built their lead to as many as 15 with Carithers scoring 15 of her 18 points in the second frame.
The Lions will return to action on Monday when they travel to St. Petersburg, Fla. to face Eckerd College in another SSC doubleheader. The women’s game will open the doubleheader with opening tip at 5:30 p.m.
