Saint Leo, Fla. (January 10, 2007) – The Saint Leo University women’s basketball team (3-10, 1-2 SSC) overcame the visiting Eckerd College Tritons (4-10, 0-4 SSC) 58-53 on Wednesday night in a Sunshine State Conference game at the Bowman Center.

The win ended a six-game losing streak for the Lions, and also marked their first league win of the year.

Saint Leo was led by Marquita Fenn (Jr., Ft. Pierce, Fla.) who recorded her third double-double of the season with a game-high tying 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.  Amanda Holloway (Jr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Latasha Lawrence (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) also added 12 points in the win.

Eckerd’s Jaime Massey led the Tritons with 16 points, while Samantha Infantino also scored in double figures with 13 points.

After the teams exchanged the lead three times in a closely played first half, Saint Leo used a 5-0 run to close the first half and take a 31-26 lead into the locker room.

The Lions continued to lead throughout the second half, as they went on a 9-0 run midway through the second stanza to open their largest lead of the game at 49-37 with 8:00 left to play.  Eckerd closed to within five with seconds remaining but got no closer, as Fenn made one of two from the line with a second left to provide the final margin.

Saint Leo will continue its Sunshine State Conference schedule with a home game on Saturday, as Florida Tech will visit the Bowman Center when the Lions host Florida Tech.  Opening tip for the first game of the doubleheader will be at 2:00 p.m.
