Saint Leo, Fla. (November 21, 2006) – The Saint Leo women’s basketball team (1-2) was edged 97-96 on Tuesday night in a non-conference game against the University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon (1-1).
Saint Leo had four players score in double figures, led by Marquita Fenn’s (Jr., Ft. Pierce, Fla.) 19 points. Amanda Holloway (Jr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) came off the bench to score 18 points, while Chemeka Amos (Sr., Zephyrhills, Fla.) netted a season-high 13. Roni Carithers (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) added 12 points in defeat for the Lions.
Puerto Rico-Bayamon got a huge night from guard Pamela Rosado who finished with a game-high 34 points. Carla Escalera added 23 points, while Normarie Montalvo rounded out a trio of players in double figures with a 20-point effort.
The Lions led 54-49 at half but a 19-point second half from Rosado led the Cowgirls to their first win. PR-Bayamon scored the final four points of the game to come away with the one-point victory.
Saint Leo will head to Pensacola, Fla. this weekend for the UWF Classic hosted by West Florida. The Lions will face the University of West Alabama on Friday at 5:00 p.m. ET before taking on West Florida on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. ET.
