SAINT LEO, Fla. – In beginning the quest to repeat as Sunshine State Conference Regular Season Championships, Head Coach Sam Cibrone officially announced that Lauren Charles and Carlos Ramos will assume the assistant coach roles for the Lions heading into the 2010 season.

Charles, a volunteer member of the coaching staff during the 2009 season, is a former player under Coach Cibrone at both the high school and early-college level before parting ways when Cibrone took the helm at Saint Leo in 2004.

Earning her degree from the University of South Florida in 2007, the native of Tampa, Fla. has been heavily involved in the club volleyball scene since 2005.  Involved with the Tampa United Volleyball Academy, Charles taught the game of volleyball to girls between the ages of 9 and 18 and organized and ran portions of the club, including the club’s numerous tournaments.

On the court she will focus on working with the Lions’ talented core of setters while, outside of competition, she will handle many of the squad’s administrative duties and assist Coach Cibrone with recruiting and travel.

Coming to SLU Volleyball from Dorado, Puerto Rico, Carlos Ramos worked his way to the sidelines after concluding his playing career for Division I Ball State University in 2006.  After hanging up the jersey, Ramos moved into the coaching ranks when he was named the head coach for Hillsborough High School during the 2006 season.  Moving into the collegiate coaching scene, Ramos earned a spot on the coaching staff at the University of South Florida where he helped guide the Bulls to a 54-33 record during three seasons.

Playing volleyball since the age of 12, Ramos will also use his experience playing for the Borinquen Coquí Volleyball Club and his current knowledge of the Florida club volleyball scene while as a coach at the Tampa United Volleyball Academy to help the Lions, especially with his high energy style.

Ramos will use his knowledge and skill to focus mainly on working with the hitters and the Lions’ defensive scheme for the 2010 season.

Charles and Ramos step in after the Lions’ former assistant tandem of Dan King and Jenn Corkum departed for in Midwest as Corkum was named head coach for Southeastern Oklahoma State University and King joined as an assistant for the Savage Storm.  The announcement of the new coaches also completes the Lions’ staff for the 2010 season.

Saint Leo Volleyball is coming off their most successful campaign in program history.  The Lions compiled a 30-4 record and a share of the Sunshine State Conference Championship while ending their season with a 10th place ranking and the runner up trophy in the NCAA South Region Tournament.
