SAINT LEO, Fla. – After a perfect week on the court, Saint Leo volleyball player Kaitlin McKenna was named the Sunshine State Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week it was announced by new SSC Commissioner Jay Jones on Monday afternoon.
McKenna led the Lions to a 4-0 mark at the UWF Regional Crossover Tournament in Pensacola, Fla. The Farmington Hills, Mich. native averaged 3.8 kills and 1.3 blocks per set while posting a .378 attack percentage. She tallied double-figure kills in three matches.
Her most impressive outing came in four-set upset of host and No. 19 West Florida, as the junior notched 20 kills with a .349 attack percentage and seven blocks. She had 12 kills and three blocks in a pair of three-set wins over North Alabama and P.R.-Rio Piedras. McKenna's efforts earned her a slot on the UWF South Region Crossover All-Tournament Team.
As a team, the Lions only dropped one set the entire weekend, sweeping through three of the four opponents.
McKenna’s award, added to an SLU Athlete of the Week Award she earned on Monday morning, begins a busy week for SLU Athletics as every Fall sport is in action, including women’s golf, who kicks off their non-championship season in Waynesville, N.C. in the Great Smokies Intercollegiate next Saturday.
Volleyball will try to ‘Black Out the Tars’ on Wednesday in their Sunshine State Conference home opener and then travel to Melbourne, Fla. on Saturday to face Florida Tech. Women’s soccer will host Robert Morris College on Thursday evening before opener their 2009 conference schedule with a weekend match in St. Petersburg, Fla. against Eckerd College. Men’s soccer will host Palm Beach Atlantic on Friday evening and men’s and women’s cross country will travel to Gainesville, Fla. on Friday to race in the University of Florida Gator Invitational.
