SAINT LEO, Fla. – Looking to spearhead another record-setting year, Saint Leo University head volleyball coach Sam Cibrone has announced the release of the 2009 Saint Leo Volleyball schedule.
The Lions will open the season on August 28th almost 2000 miles from home as they will be playing in the Holiday Inn/Oredigger Classic located in Golden, Colorado and hosted by the Colorado School of Mines. The Lions will square off against Adams State to open the season and faces Mesa State that evening. Saint Leo opens the second day in early-afternoon action against Fort Lewis and concludes the tournament with a primetime matchup against the host Orediggers.
The Oredigger Classic is the first of three tournaments that will get the Lions’ season underway. The second is closer to home as SLU travels to Lakeland on September 4th and participates in the Florida Southern Classic where they will square off against a perennial top-10 team in Minnesota-Duluth. The tourney will also see Saint Leo open their home schedule with a match against East Stroudsburg University on September 5th.
Saint Leo closes out the tournament portion of their schedule when they travel to Pensacola on September 11th and 12th to participate in the UWF Regional Crossover. The Lions will play in four matches including a vital NCAA South Region matchup against host and 2008 South Region runner-up West Florida on Friday in primetime. Another match puts the Lions against Arkansas Tech for a second-straight year as SLU looks to bounce-back from the 3-2 heartbreaking loss they suffered at the hands of the Golden Sun in 2008.
After returning from Pensacola, the Lions will take their first tour through the powerful Sunshine State Conference, facing all eight teams within the span of a month. The schedule sees the Lions open up SSC play at home against Rollins while also facing Lynn, Barry, Florida Southern and Nova Southeastern on the Bowman Center court.
Before heading through the conference again, SLU takes a break from the SSC to face Bentley, West Florida and Harding in the middle of October during a week-long span of contests.
Conference play returns on October 21st as the Lions welcome Florida Tech before closing the regular season playing five of their final seven matches on the road.
Saint Leo concludes the home schedule with crucial contests against Tampa on November 4th and a Senior Night tilt against Eckerd on November 7th.
After closing out the season on the road against Nova Southeastern and Florida Southern the Lions will hope to be looking for another NCAA Tournament bid to the South Region Championships which will take place November 19th – 21st.
The NCAA Division II National Championships will be contested December 3rd – 5th.
