SAINT LEO, Fla. – Add two more awards for the Saint Leo University volleyball team as junior Michelle Nogueras and sophomore Kaitlin McKenna were named to the 2008 American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American Team in a release announced on Wednesday afternoon.

Nogueras, a setter from Cayey, Puerto Rico, earned a place on the AVCA’s third team where she was joined by fellow Sunshine State Conference player Danielle Higginbotham.  The 5’8” junior earned both Conference and National Player of the Week honors as she finished the season with 1,359 set assists and still managed a .343 attack percentage.  Completing her trio of threats, Nogueras also added 73 blocks and 45 aces to the stat sheet this year. This All-America honor caps off a fantastic third season in Green & Gold where she was named to both the All-Conference and All-Region teams.

McKenna finds herself still in the hunt to repeat as the NCAA statistical percentage champion as she currently holds a .398 attack percentage and sits in seventh spot in the nation, with the National Tournament yet to be played.  Earning the SSC Player of the Week in early September, she averaged 2.59 kills per game and had a team-leading 142 blocks, 29 coming as solo blocks, which is second in the SSC.  The native of Farmington Hills, Michigan, McKenna has always managed to post the big kill when the Lions needed her to contribute the most.  Her powerful arm took nearly 750 swings this season and dropped down 388 kills.

The 28th annual Volleyball All-America selections were made by the AVCA Division II All-America Committee: Laurie Lokash, Slippery Rock University, chairperson; Mario Andaya, Central Washington University; Christy Benner, Wheeling Jesuit University; Jim Boos, University of Minnesota Duluth; Todd Caughlin, St. Mary’s University;  Shelton Collier, Wingate University; Sandy Hoffman, Bentley College; Deanne Scanlon, Grand Valley State University; and Jill Stephens, Florida Southern College.
