TAMPA, Fla. – The Saint Leo University volleyball team (29-11) had a spectacular run during the 2008 season and culminated it with a appearance in the NCAA Tournament South Region semifinals.
After an unbelievable five-set victory over rival Florida Southern, their second five-set victory in eight days, in the quarterfinals, the Lions entered a semifinal match with the Nova Southeastern Sharks where they claimed a 2-0 match lead. Unfortunately for the Lions, NSU battled back to tie the set at two and eventually took the match in a three point fifth set victory.
Nova went on to win the championship, beating West Florida in five sets.
Still, the Lions were recognized with two players on the South Region volleyball All-Tournament team, as both Michelle Nogueras and Kaitlin McKenna claimed the honors.
McKenna was the leader in kills for Saint Leo collecting 30 in 10 sets played. She finished with a .324 attack percentage and averaged 3.00 kills per set, while only committing eight attack errors. The middle blocker was also a force on defense totaling seven block assists.
Nogueras played spectacular volleyball herself, tallying 86 assists in ten sets played. The junior setter finished the tournament with 11 kills, a .333 attack percentage and only committing three errors in 24 total attempts. Nogueras also rose to the occasion on the defensive end, blocking six total balls, including five block assists.
The duo also was named to the SSC All-Conference second team, McKenna as a middle blocker and Nogueras as the setter.
