SAINT LEO, Fla. - Saint Leo Lions volleyball freshman Corey Ryan was named Defensive Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week; it was announced Monday by SSC Commissioner Michael J. Marcil.

Ryan was called upon to assist with libero duties due to a rash of injuries and filled the role in admirable fashion, helping lift the Lions to a pair of key SSC victories.  Last Tuesday against Eckerd College, she posted 13 digs in a three-set sweep of the Tritons. On Saturday against Barry University, Ryan notched a 20 dig performance in a five-set thriller, the first of her career.  In the victory, the Lion defense held the Buccaneers to a .164 attack percentage.  Ryan concluded the week with an average of 4.1 digs per frame and helped limit SLU’s opponents to a combined .216 hitting percentage. 

She has now amassed 58 digs for the season, averaging 2.15 digs per game.

The freshman is the fourth volleyball player to be given the distinct award during the 2008 season.

Ryan and the rest of the Lions look to extend their consecutive SSC winning-streak to three matches this Wednesday evening at University of Tampa. The match will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Bob Martinez Sports Center and will be heard live on the Saint Leo Lions AudioCast Network.
