Saint Leo, Fla. (September 2, 2008) – In the Sunshine State Conference’s first Player of the Week awards for the 2008-09 seasons, Saint Leo University sophomore middle-blocker Kaitlin McKenna has already notched one trophy as she was named the top offensive player in the conference for the week of August 24-31.
McKenna led the Lions to a 4-0 start to the season, including a win over No. 21 Ashland on Saint Leo’s first day of play. The native of Farmington Hills, Michigan averaged 3.3 kills and 1.1 blocks per game while hitting at an impressive .532 clip. She tallied double-figure kills in each match, including 16 kills with a sizzling .682 hitting percentage in a four-game win over North¬wood (Mich.). The reigning award-winner for the NCAA’s highest hitting percentage, she did not hit lower than .316 in all matches, and hit over the .533 mark in three-of-four.
Although up for the offensive award, McKenna was also a strong defensive presence with 17 total blocks, seven coming by herself.
With one award under her belt already this year, McKenna will help lead the undefeated Lions into the Florida Tech Invitational this coming weekend in Melbourne, Florida. Saint Leo will face some stiff competition beginning on Friday with two matches, the first against Converse College at 2:30 p.m. and the nightcap against Northwood (Fla.) at 7:30 p.m.
